A coolant is more precisely defined as a cutting fluid and is categorized as a synthetic fluid (water-based solution of dissolved chemicals(s), an emulsion (suspension of oil droplets in water), a semi-synthetic fluid (a mixture of synthetic and emulsion fluids), or a 'straight' oil fluid.
